What will Nikon do?

Usually I do not comment on camera development... and I know that being against the megapixel race is very common at the moment... but given that a Canon EOS 5D Mk II body with 21mpx costs about the same as a Nikon D700 body with 12mpx, and that I'm not very interested in high ISO performance as a landscape photographer I wonder if Nikon will provide a tool for those of us who want more megapixels. Hmmmm.

  1. I think the choice for you is clear. For landscape, 5D#2 hands down. It's also got 1080p. None of Nikon's offerings have 1080p.

If shooting people and at night time, the 51 AF (11 cross point) of D700 plus scene recognition+matrix metering wins hands down.

If you have money for D3x, then you'll get 51 AF plus lots of MP. And if you wait a few months, D700x will come out but it'll be priced between D700 and D3x. Is it worth it? Only if you shoot people + night.

Since you prioritize landscape over people + high ISO, you already know which one fits you better. Go indulge yourself :)

  2. Noooo, don't tempt him to use Cannon. Then we will be in different systems.

  3. Fear not, mylady. I will *never* ever part with the S5pro, I thought you would know that. :)

  4. Oh but you did not say you will never get a Cannon. We will see how many bags you are going to carry then. ;)

  5. Just to be clear, IMHO the choice that you can have it all is D3x. 24.5 megapixels, 51 AF, and it's Nikon. You should get it! :)

  6. Thanks Kevin - it's not that I need that right now, and in the full frame world, there are two more choices with 24mpx: the Sony Alpha 850 & 900...

My post was more like... a D700x (or something) with higher resolution (and less high ISO abilities) needs a reasonable price (competitive to the 5D MKII I'd say) or else it will only be attractive to people who already use Nikon.

Thom Hogan suspects a high resolution FX body to be priced somewhere in between the D700 and the D3x - and that would not be reasonable, IMHO... because the 5D MKII has a much better price then...
