Bad Weather - Good Photos (Part 2)

Last Saturday it was raining... and raining... and raining. It finally stopped in the afternoon, and I decided to visit the Frillensee near Inzell once more. Thats about a one hour drive from here, and after I was driving half an hour it started raining again. I had my rain poncho with me so I thought "what the heck" and went there nevertheless.

Reaching the small lake from the parking lot at the Gasthof Adlgaß is no problem, its a relaxing walk of about 45 minutes through the forest, mostly along the small Frillenseebach (brook). In the rain... well, even with the poncho, it wasn't so relaxing. As we reached the small shelter at the lake, both Toni and me were pretty soaked... :-P

At the shelter I thought "wow, what a lousy location for making photos!" because there's only a relatively small view of the lake through the trees. I set up the camera & tripod nevertheless, just killing time, waiting if it wouldn't stop to rain... and from that "lousy location" I made this photo (a manifestation of my love for that 70-300VR telezoom):

Small Bridge (FinePix S5Pro, 5s @ ISO 100; f/16, 300 mm DX)

Later, it indeed stopped to rain and I continued my walk around the lake. The reflections were just wonderful, calm water, and the gloomy day allowed very long exposure times even without ND filter. I was pretty focused on the water, trees, plants and the reflections when I remembered an advice that can be found in almost all photography books: "look up!" - and I did...

Lifting Rainclouds (FinePix S5Pro, 1/18s @ ISO 100; f/11, 95 mm DX)

The thick and low hanging rain clouds just lifted and rose up at the Dunklwand, slowly revealing some rocky ledges and tree silhouettes. This went on for a couple of minutes before it started to rain again and I headed home.

One thing worth mentioning is the meditational quality of photography. As soon as I set up the tripod, mount the camera on it and look through the viewfinder, the outside world with its sensations is reduced to a minimum. Cold? Wet? Hungry? It doesn't matter anymore... it doesn't exist anymore.

More photos to come in a web album soon (I hope). Colors for the first photo are not what they should be like. I have to rework it slightly.

  1. Man, Part 1 was posted back to October 2008! You are testing how good your reader's memory is, huh. :-P
The lighting of the the first picture is so great that the picture looks so dimensional. The 2nd picture simply reminds me of traditional Chinese paintings. It looks so unworldly...
I feel the same way when taking pictures. I endure the temperature change, fatigue and hunger much better than when I do anything else. Sometimes I just totally forget about it. The drive to make a good photo is so strong that I could stand 4 hours straight without taking a break. Nothing is more rewarding when I make a good photo that I really like it myself. ^_^
